SERIOUS AND FOR REAL
“Life is not a movie. We don't act. We live.” These are the words of the one of protagonists in the film The African Cypher which will have the Slovenian premiere at our festival. … hence culture and art are not (merely) entertainment, we could add.
Dance is the most human art. A dancer's body in action is a thought transformed into the concrete. This thought is also transient, as is the movement of the body. To fully perceive it, we have to be there. Nothing virtual, only a real body consumed by a thought. In short, dance and art are the way to truth. However, ‘exaggerated seriousness’ doesn't make sense.
Art is also a vivid field of communication, with so many great methods and varied responses it gives sense to our lives beyond a general obsession with usefulness and 'cashability'. It is part of life. Ordinary life.
Artistic creation requires commitment and dedication. This leads to exceptionality. Exceptionality is also conferred by awards granted to the participating artists and their creations, be it young dancers with short dance pieces or their older and more widely-acclaimed colleagues. Exceptionality is also corroborated by the most prominent stages that participating performances come from.
For this reason, 13 is, this year, a lucky number because we are able to host such extraordinary and internationally renowned dance artists, so much young talent and two musicians who will present themselves in a concert. Not to forget the film, for which we fought some years to bring to the festival.
All this indicates that such a festival held on the outskirts is a ‘serious’ but not a ‘grave’ matter. The same as contemporary dance…
