Not aggression, curiosity broadens horizons
After eighteen years, the Front@ Festival in Murska Sobota remains a challenge. Most of the townspeople have never heard of it, while some know about it but have never attended. However, there is a dedicated group of loyal visitors and some curious and casual festival-goers. Interestingly, based on the interest in participating, Front@ has a more substantial reputation in international dance circles. Therein lies the essential reason for the festival's existence: to spark curiosity within the local community and interaction between visitors, guests, and artists from around the globe. The festival truly justifies its existence when, after the events, spectators want to learn more about what they have seen, the background and origins of the works, and when performers become interested in the local context. Curiosity, which drives communication beyond the ordinary, the reticent, and even the fearful, lies at the heart of Front@'s mission. Fear of the unknown often leads to aggressive reactions, making the curiosity that fosters meaningful communication crucial for understanding new and diverse perspectives.
Each edition of the festival is a balancing act between aspirations and possibilities. During the preparation and design of the festival programme, we carefully strive to balance showcasing established top artists with offering young and lesser-known artists the chance to present their work at a condensed multi-day event. From its inception, Front@ has been envisioned as a dance festival providing the broadest possible perspective on contemporary dance. This year, the Open City III programme section based on an open call is the most effective way to curate a lineup that includes quality artists who may lack a strong production background or sophisticated PR strategy. This approach ensures the programme reaches beyond the limited information available within narrow insider circles.
In addition to including younger and lesser-known artists and their works, we also find it essential to feature artists from other continents. Since its inception over a century ago, contemporary dance has spread to all corners of the globe. Initially, this expansion involved imitating Western methods and approaches, but it soon evolved to incorporate unique poetics that draw on local dance and movement cultures and traditions. The programme features three outstanding young artists from South Korea, selected at the Seoul International Choreography Festival.
This year, outstanding achievements from Slovenia and neighbouring countries are showcased in an exceptional co-production between En-Knap and the Zagreb Dance Ensemble. This collaboration features a remarkable cast from both ensembles performing Gran Bolero, choreographed by Spanish choreographer Jesus Rubio Gamo. Additionally, the Central European Dance Theatre from Budapest will present Ageless Generation, choreographed by Slovak choreographer Anton Lachky, who lives and works in Belgium. These two productions particularly highlight the international interconnectedness of contemporary dance. At its core, with its constant openness to the other(ness), contemporary dance embraces, intertwines, and envelops a multitude of local influences, merging them into a universal dance expression.
New worlds, with all their diversities incorporated into contemporary dance, are, above all, a source of curiosity. Curiosity constantly broadens the horizon of thought. That is why art, and especially contemporary dance – which embodies human transience through body, time, and space – is a welcome counterbalance to the impoverished and narrow-minded communication often found on social networks. Unlike the curiosity about the unknown that art actually fosters, social networks frequently respond with unbridled aggression and superficiality.
